weekend whats {birthday edition}

chocolate cake{Indulge: Chocolate cake from the Ritz-Carlton}

Happy Friday! I hope everyone had a lovely week. I had an especially lovely week since my birthday was yesterday, and I couldn’t have asked for a better day. It started with an endearing rendition of “Happy Birthday”, a long-desired gift, and thoughtful poem from my husband. Then I spent the day with one of my best friends for a luxurious champagne lunch, shopping, and an impromptu dessert with her mom, too. My heart is still warm from all the calls and texts from friends and family. My husband made one of my favorite dinners and we enjoyed a relaxing evening at home. . . and then the power went out. What? So we lit every candle in the house and woke up to blown surges. Lovely. Today’s weekend whats are ways to make a birthday (or any day) fabulous. Have a great weekend!

how-to: red lips

red lips

I love red lips, especially during the holiday season. They’re so traditional and classic, and can elevate a simple look. I’ve heard rumblings from gals (I’m looking at you, Kristine) who are weary of red lips for fear of being too conspicuous or not knowing how to apply it. I think any girl can pull it off with a tweak of the shades or intensity. Here is a quick how-to on applying different layers in order to achieve a wearable red lip that works for day or night. Go on, give it a try.

red lips

Steps for classic red lips:

1.) Exfoliate and prep those girls! For a great how-to on treating winter lips, click here.

2.) Prep with clear and non-glossy lip balm. I actually used my cuticle cream. Sounds weird, but the texture is perfect.

3.) Dot lips with a light layer of foundation or concealer.

4.) Line with lip liner. I prefer a neutral liner rather than red and use Chanel Precision Lip Definer in Natural.

5.) Apply a deeper matte lipstick. I like Bobbi Brown Lip Color in Ruby, which is almost a wine color after several coats.

6.) Top with a red gloss. I use Chanel Rouge Allure Extrait de Gloss in Fatale.

Now go out and enjoy your soirée with red lips that will last nearly all night.

six essential lessons learned from the birthday girl

Happy Friday, y’all!  Today is an especially exciting Friday because it is one of my closest friend’s birthday.  Happy Birthday, Bree!  Remember when I highlighted my super chic friends (here and here)?  I could never pick just one trait to talk about for my friend Bree, so sadly I never got around to posting on how amazing she is.  Would I talk about her effortless, chic style?  (She’s preggers in the picture above and still looks completely put together!  You can see her perfect baby girl here.)  No, because I really have no idea how to explain achieving the look, except for when it comes to looking cute in scrubs.  Would I talk about how thoughtful she is, even sending Charlie get well cards?  Or, would I talk about what a doer she is, you know those people that are always trying new things and appear to love every minute of it?  Hmm.

Since I j’adore lists, I categorized the top six lessons I’ve learned from Bree throughout our thirteen years of friendship, spanning weddings, proms, breakups, college, dogs, and everything in between:

6.  Do not, under any circumstance, heat up tortillas in the microwave.  Tsk tsk.

5.  A house can look very chic with high-end furniture and homemade decorations.

4.  Quality is more important than quantity in every aspect of life.

3.  Resist the urge to run errands in sweats or workout gear.  Get dressed, swipe on some lipgloss, and venture out feeling much better about yourself.

2.  There is always a reason to send a card, especially if it involves drawings created after a few too many cocktails.

1.  Try something new, sign up for random classes, travel, and keep learning.

{She runs half-marathons, has done a triathlon, plays tennis, and snowboards.}

{My little cousin Spencer fell in love with her.}

{We were both in each other’s weddings.}

So, I hope everyone has a great weekend!  Make like Bree and find something new to try.  Speaking of which, there is one more day to enter for a chance to win free Stella & Dot jewelry!

“You know, when I was a kid, I got a sunburn like that and just peeled all the skin off, put it in a pile, and ate it.”

Happy Friday, friends!  I am très ready for this weekend.  I am a bit more prepared than last weekend when I spent 1.5 hours by the pool and got a horrific sunburn.  I put sunscreen on my face yet for some reason failed to apply any to the rest of my body.  Needless to say, my décollage had seen better days.  I turned to a faithful post-exposure product that my mother used to slather on my sister and I when we were teenagers and acquired a sunburn (which was actually quite rare, given our Polish skin and jobs as lifeguards).  I swear by it still because it turns cherry red burns into golden tans and rarely allows the skin to peel.  Of course, without peeling what would Elliot Reid eat for a snack?

{If you find yourself in a similar situation I highly recommend Total Insurance SunBurn Relief Gel.}

I know, I know…we all need to wear SPF500 when outdoors these days, which is why I promptly set out to buy my favorite sun protection products because, let’s face it, I am old enough to know better.

{Oh la la, Clarins Sunscreen Care Cream SPF 20 goes on smooth and makes skin feel amazing.  I wouldn’t have even guessed it is sunscreen!}

{I love Aveeno Continuous Protection Sunblock with SPF 30 for Face because it is not oily, unfortunately scented, or super expensive.}

{Don’t forget your lips, especially if they take up a large percentage of your face such as mine do.  (Remember?)  I’m not a fan of white lips reminiscent of lifeguards from the 1970s so I choose a clear version to protect my kisser: Laura Mercier Lip Balm SPF 15.}

I’m ready now.  Are you?  Do you have any other skin protection products you can’t life without?

{PS The quote from Scrubs is one of my favorites ever.  If only Elliot Reid, MD, was real and we were BFFs.}

citrus inspiration for casual fridays

I put my best pals through absolute torture the summer before my freshman year of college. I spent endless hours searching for the perfect sheets for my dorm room and insisted on their company and input during this quest. Typical of my neurotic mind, I had something specific in mind and would not settle until I found those quintessential sheets that surely would lead to undergraduate bliss. I finally found them to my friends’ delight and the winning sheets were covered in lemons, limes, and oranges. I often think of them fondly and still love the colors, print, and anything citrus flavored. Hence the inspiration for my spirit-lifting Friday attire sure to brighten up the last day before the weekend right down to the bright orange lips {and other accompanying happy citrus images}. For a weekend outfit, I’d switch the blue jeans for a white pair.

{All images not of me were found via Pinterest}

I hope you all have a lovely weekend! Be bright and happy.

daily beauty essentials

Happy Monday!  I hope everyone had a lovely St. Patrick’s Day weekend.  The highlights of my weekend were: discovering that our favorite sushi restaurant delivered, waking up the day after St. Patrick’s Day not hungover, and finishing my best friend’s baby gift.  Wild.  And, can’t forget, I caught up on some overdue magazine reading.

Is there any better ritual than cozying up on the couch (or a lounge chair in the sun) with a stack of new magazines, a tasty beverage, and no specific agenda in mind?  There is something so gloriously indulgent about it that I grow giddy whenever I have the time to enjoy this.  Yes, like many gals I am a fashion/beauty/home magazine junky.  However, the feeling that every item in there has an agenda behind it leaves me feeling slightly used.  I can’t help but wonder if the products they promote are actually the best or if their spot in the magazine was paid for.  For example, I find it fishy that actresses on the cover rock a Dolce & Gabanna dress, Christian Louboutin heels, and a face made up of Revlon cosmetics?  (Oh, and then their full page Revlon ad is on the next page.)  I actually really want to know what the best products are.

So, if you feel the same as me, settle for much-less-than-second-best and read on for my favorite beauty products.  Then please share some of yours as well and spread the beauty love through tried and true use rather than faux promotion.

{Mascara: Chanel Inimitable Intense in Noir.  I have tried many kinds in my 15 years of makeup wearing and always return to this.  For more daily makeup essentials, read this post.}

{Body lotion: Eucerin Original Healing Lotion.  I have been a faithful user since high school when it soothed my dry, chlorine-saturated skin.  Plus it is unscented therefore will not compete with perfume.  Too much scent = headache.}

{Tool: Clarisonic Mia Skincare Brush.  The hype is for real; it truly helps skin look brighter.  For face wash I use Dermalogica Dermal Clay Cleanser which is amazing for oily skin.}

{Shower gel: Kiehl’s Grapefruit Liquid Body Cleanser.  The scent is refreshing and subtle.}

{Secret exfoliator: Arm & Hammer Baking Soda.  I learned this trick from my friend’s mom in high school and have been using it about once/week since then.  To do, mix a few tablespoons in your hand with water until you’ve achieved a thick paste, rub on your clean and damp face, and rinse.  Your skin will feel unbelievably smooth!}

{Makeup brush: Trish McEvoy Powder Blush Brush.  Good brushes truly make a difference.  It takes a while to build the collection but I promise you’ll enjoy not having little black hairs strewn about and splotches of ill-placed powder on your face.}

{Eye makeup remover: Lancôme Bi-Facil Double-Action Eye Makeup Remover.  This is the only kind that takes everything off and doesn’t sting my eyeballs.  *Eye doctor approved!}

{Weekend eye makeup: Chanel Les 4 Ombres Quadra Eyeshadow in Kaska Beige, Winter Nights, and (my new favorite) Eclosion.  The colors are gorgeous and stay put well into the evening.}

Please share your favorite beauty products as well!  I love to try new items.  {Don’t we all?}

to sock bun or not to sock bun?

Things I hope will never go out of style: top ponies, messy buns, and bright pink lips. Isn’t it glorious that girls today can get away with spending five minutes on their hair and it can be considered chic? Our grandmothers would not approve. (Grandmother Quote: “Doesn’t that get all snarly?”)

I am always looking for quick and easy variations of styling a top pony, because, well, it is way too much work to style this lion’s mane more than once a week. The idea of using a cutoff sock to create a messy chic bun has been floating around Pinterest and blogs. It sparked my curiosity as to whether the sock would make the bun cuter or if it would just be awkward. Interested yet? Here is how to create said chic messy bun:

{First, cut off a sock.}

{Then wrap the sock around a teased, high pony tail 1990s scrunchy style.}

{Start by grabbing one inch sections of the pony tail, wrap under towards your head, and pin the ends with a bobby pin.}

{Continue pinning the pony tail until all of your hair is pinned in a circular formation and the sock is invisible. In hindsight, hot pink was probably not the best color sock to choose. Oops.}

{Add a little sparkle, if you feel so inclined.}

{I began having images of a wannabe lookalike Disney princess so back went the bangs.}

Verdict: I do not think the sock is super beneficial for gals with a lion’s mane, however may be helpful to add fullness for girls with less volume (i.e., a normal amount of hair to have on one’s head). In fact, I ended up taking the sock out. The principle of the method, though, is still quite cute! And it only takes 5-10 minutes. Cheers to my fellow busy gals that don’t have hours to spend on their hair!

wear sunnies {they’re good for your health}

 I am completely obsessed with sunglasses.  In fact, a few years ago in a kayaking excursion gone bust I was tragically attacked by the ocean reef in order to rescue my Chanel limited addition sunglasses.  I attribute my light-sensitive eyes, laziness with eye makeup, and perpetual fear of wrinkles for this constant need to don shades.  I think having at least two pairs in constant rotation should be at the bottom of Maslow’s hierarchy of needs.  Superficial?  No way.  Dump your guilt on another  accessory because sunglasses are good for your health.  That is correct, pals, invest in a decent pair of shades and increase the longevity of your life (okay, that may have been a tad melodramatic).

If you need reassurance to protect your peepers, trust my husband, brother- and sister-in-law who all just happen to be eye doctors.  Regularly rocking sunglasses helps prevent cataracts, macular degeneration, and a few other diseases with really long names.   After picking all their brains I’ve compiled the most relevant information for your spring 2012 sunglass shopping excursion:

{Look for lenses with UV A/B protection for all glasses, polarized lenses for water/snow sports, polycarbonate lenses for high impact sports, and an anti-reflective coding for driving.}

{Not all sunglasses are created equal and fancy brands (à la Chanel, Prada, and Versace) do not necessarily provide the best eye protection.  However, Chanel recently started making polarized lenses.  Rejoice!}

{My sister-in-law loves her Tory Burch sunnies because they have a special coating on the outside of the lenses that show a cool design, which is invisible to the person wearing them and makes it easier to spy on people.}

Pictured above: The Eye Expert Trifecta wearing Tory Burch, Maui Jim, and Prada shades.

{Her latest favorite are Cazal glasses because they are classy looking and contain real gold in the frames.  Apparently Jay Z likes them, too!  Baller.}

And, of course, I have chosen my favorite shades that would be chic additions to anyone’s beautiful face.

{I love the look of aviators however I am sadly unable to rock the metal frame kind (dang you, wide nose bridge).  That is why I j’adore my plastic frame aviators, similar to these.  My husband practices what he preaches and is sporting polarized Maui Jim sunglasses, which is a recommended brand by all three of the eye doctor folks.}

{Here are a few versions of classic, big glasses.  (See similar styles here and here.)  I recommend having at least one classic pair that go with anything and am partial to tortoise frames.}

{These frames give a little edge with the tiniest cat eye curve, similar to this pair.}

{I am confident I will always love big glasses regardless of what is considered in style.  Due to BHS (Big Head Syndrome, it is a Polish affliction) my sister and I need the large frames for our large faces!  She is rocking some oversized Burberry sunglasses, similar to this pair.  Do you suffer from Small Head Syndrome?  Look for Gucci sunglasses because, according to my sister-in-law, this brand fits her smaller head perfectly.}

{It’s never too early to protect little one’s eyes!  My sister-in-law recommends Julbo and Bolle for baby sunglasses, which stay on well and do not squeeze too hard on sensitive temples.  If you’re looking for a baby shower or birthday gift consider an adorable pair of sunglasses (straight from the mother/eye doctor’s mouth).}

what were you made fun of for?

Everyone was teased for something. Even the prettiest gals in school were poked fun at, albeit it was because their boobs developed early. However that hurt their feelings nonetheless. We all know that the playground can be rough and every kid has something to be picked on about. The best news is that we grow up and often the awkward aspect of our appearance or personality turns into a prime virtue in our adult lives. Whether it was being too skinny (now rockingly buff), biracial (I’d give anything for that skin), too soft spoken (now the most soothing eye doctor you’ll ever come across!), a bonafide nerd (now a computer science genius), or a nose too pronounced (didn’t Carrie Bradshaw make that cool?) we all have a trait we adore now yet detested back then.

{These lips were made for bright colors.}

I inherited these lips (a family attribute on both sides, there was no escape) and was relentlessly teased. Now strangers ask “who did them”. Take that!

So what were you made fun of for that is now a treasured trait?

how to: spiced up pony

Fact: I wear my hair up 99% of the time. Fact: The same old pony/messy bun gets old.

To alleviate bun boredom I usually try to incorporate braids or wear sparkly hair accessories. This little braided hair style provides some excitement when I don’t have time to blow dry my hair. Here is a step-by-step guide to creating a French braided messy bun like this:

{First, get the top half of your hair out of the way. Then start with three small sections at the top of your neck.}

{Create a French braid going towards the top of your head. I am not going to go into how to do a regular French braid but if you need a tutorial, try this one (I am talking to you, Kristine!)}

{After you’ve braided to your crown use a clear elastic to pull all of your hair in a pony tail.}

{I think it is helpful to re-braid the tail of the French braided portion so the braid is tight. Then secure with a clear elastic.}

{Use the braid to wrap around the pony tail like an elastic to create a messy bun. Then pin the braid in place.}

{Smooth down fly aways and use bobby pins to tame any wild pieces of hair.}

{And then, voilà! All done and ready to go.}

{Are you feeling the spring love?}
